The training Monitoring racism in grassroots sport, developed as part of the Erasmus + project Monitora, monitoring racism in sport, is online. The training is aimed at sports operators, coaches and all those who love sports.
The training, developed in five languages (Italian, Hungarian, French, English and Finnish), is structured in 5 short modules that aim to increase the knowledge of those who live and experience the world of sports, especially grassroots sports, about discrimination and racism and provide useful tools to recognize and prevent them. It also offers useful guidance on how to behave and who to turn to when discrimination breaks into our sports activities.
At the same time Monitoring Racism in Grassroots Sport intends to encourage proactive activation by facilitating activities to monitor cases of racism and discrimination. Too often, discrimination in sports remains invisible, either because it is not reported or denounced or because complaints are not followed up with anything but mere sanctions, without then imagining anything else that would encourage prevention, such as training or educational initiatives. In fact, it is important to train oneself to recognize the seriousness of certain facts, without belittling them as mere taunting: it is also crucial to communicate to people affected by racism and discrimination that they can count on a network of protection and safeguards when reporting.
The training aims to encourage sport operators, but also grassroots sports associations and clubs, to have protocols for monitoring racism in sport. To facilitate the creation of these monitoring protocols, we have developed guidelines on how they should be structured, but also an editable protocol template that the training users can fill out directly at the end of the course or download it to do so at a later date, subsequently sharing it with their own reality or network of reference.
Racism is a complex phenomenon and to be countered it needs the deployment of different types of interventions. Monitoring is the first step to be able to structure effective training, awareness and protection initiatives and strategies.
